Panel 1
Mali and Vara look toward townspeople gathered at the timber gate beneath the school sign and three silver feathers. Vara quietly offers Mali the choice to refuse.
Vara: You can refuse him.
Panel 2
Mali questions Vara. Neri sits behind them, looking down with her injured right arm still in its sling.
Mali: Can you?
Vara: I could have. Before I let the first one step out.
Panel 3
Neri catches Mali’s reaction to the gathering audience and teases her. Mali answers with a small smile.
Neri: You wanted an audience for the Assembly.
Mali: I wanted supper.
Panel 4
Mali turns toward the cleared square and the waiting Teren. Vara and Neri remain behind her. Her sabre stays sheathed; the fight has not begun.
Mali: Then we’ll finish it.
